JnU students protest at attack on fellow

Dhaka, May 24 (Just News): The students of Jagannath University on Thursday formed a human chain on the campus protesting at the attack on an English department student of the university and also an organiser of movement for quota reform and demanded exemplary punishment to the attackers.

The victim Md Suhel Islam was severely injured in an alleged attack by some activists of Jagannath University unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League, the student's wing of ruling Awami League, on Wednesday in front of the university campus at around 3:30pm, witnesses said.

Suhel was rushed to Ali Ajgar Hospital in old part of Dhaka for primary treatment. Later, he was shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

Speakers at human chain alleged that Suhel was attacked for his alleged involvement in the recent students' movements.

They said that they would go for tougher movement if the attackers on Suhel are not arrested soon.

Md Suhel Islam is a joint-convener of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad, a platform of the students' movement for reforming quotas in government jobs.

The victim Suhel is also an organiser protests demanding withdrawal of the removal order of English department associate professor Nasir Uddin Ahmed whom the JnU syndicate on April 26 terminated Nasir Uddin Ahmed after the report of an investigation committee accusing him of plagiarism in his writing ‘Motherhood in the poems of Sylvia Plath’.

Suhel told New Age, 'Some Chhatra League activists swooped on me and left me seriously injured in front of the campus on Wednesday afternoon.'

He said, 'The attackers caused injuries to my face, body and legs with the rods.'

'Seeing their images on Facebook, I identified at least two among the attackers who are Statistics department student Menun Mahfuj and psychology department student Alim Babu,' he also said.

'A case was filed with the Sutrapur Police Station in the regard,' Suhel added.

However, Menun Mahfuj told New Age, 'I am not involved in the incident.'

'As soon as I went to the spot, the attackers left the place,' he said.

'But I see the attackers are the junior Chhatra League activists; I know them by face,' Mahfuj also said.

Lalbagh division deputy commissioner Md Ibrahim Khan said, 'The police received a complaint letter from the victim in the matter on Wednesday.'

'We are trying to arrest the attackers on Suhel,' he said.

Krishna Chandra Mitra, investigation officer of the case, told New Age, 'The police collected some CCTV footages of the incident.'

'We will be able to identify the attackers of Suhel through these,' he said.

When approached regarding the matter, BCL JnU unit general secretary Md Joynul Abedin Rasel said, 'If any Chhatra League man is proved involvement in the incident, stern steps will be taken against them.'

JnU proctor Noor Muhammadsaid, 'The university authorities will take steps if a written complaint is given in this regard.'
