Quota system abolished for top govt jobs

Dhaka, Oct 3 (Just News): A cabinet meeting on Wednesday abolished quota system for Class I and II government jobs.

With the approval of the cabinet, the process of abolishing the quota has started. Public administration ministry will soon publish a gazette notification in this regard, said cabinet secretary Md Shafiul Islam at a briefing at the secretariat on Wednesday afternoon.

A committee headed by the cabinet secretary on 17 September submitted a report to the prime minister recommending abolition of the quota system from 9th to 13th grade of government services, following anti-quota protests across the country.

The committee recommended recruiting officers to these posts on the basis of merit.

They reviewed data available on 10 previous BCS exams and found that 12.99 per cent candidates in freedom fighters quota, 9.44 per cent in women quota and 1.17 per cent candidates in ethnic quota were recommended for recruitment at the time.

Several organisations of freedom fighters’ children and of small ethnic groups, however, have been demanding that the existing quota system for public services remain the same.
