CU teacher Maidul on 3-day remand

Chattogram, Oct 8 (Just News): A Chattogram court on Monday granted three-day remand for Chittagong University teacher Maidul Islam under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology Act for defaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina in his facebook post.

Chattogram district police inspector (prosecution) Bijon Kumar Barua said that police sought five days remand for CU assistant professor of Sociology Maidul Islam. After hearing on Monday senior judicial magistrate Shahidullah Kaisar granted three days remand to interrogate him in custody.

Maidul’s counsel Bhulan Lal Bhoumik said they applied to halt the hearing as they had applied for bail in High Court. But the court did not consider it and ordered to interrogate Maidul following the High Court order, he said.

On September 24, a Chattogram court sent Maidul to jail on charges of defaming prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Facebook after he had surrendered before the court on completion of his eight weeks bail granted by the High Court.

Chhatra League’s CU unit's former executive member Md Ifterkhar Uddin Ayaz filed a case against Sociology department's assistant professor Maidul Islam, under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology Act with the Hathazari police on July 23.

The Chittagong University authorities temporarily suspended Maidul on September 25. The suspension order came in a letter issued and signed by Registrar (acting) KM Nur Ahmed.
