BCL attacks on university students continue

Dhaka, Jan 29 (Just News): Chhatra League men on Monday attacked activists of left-leaning student organisations at Rajshahi University, Chittagong University, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology and other places who were enforcing strikes at campuses demanding punishment for Chhatra League attack on a group of protestors in Dhaka University on January 23.

Ruling Awami League backed Chhatra League men also attacked activists of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote at Chittagong City College, Phulbari in Dinajpur and obstructed picketing at Eden Girls College, BM College in Barisal, Victoria College in Comilla and others, said the left leaning activists.

Attacks on left leaning student activists left at least 15 injured at different campuses including eight in Shahjalal University of Science and Technology, Chhatra Union president GM Zilani Shubo said.

He said that they would hold protest rallies across the country on January 31 and submit memorandum to the president Abdul Hamid on February 18, protesting series of Chhatra League attacks.

Pragatashil Chhatra Jote and Nipiran Birodhi Shikkharti Brindya of Dhaka University enforced the strike in the country’s educational institutions in protest at Chhatra League repression against students across the nation.

Their five-point demand includes punishment of the BCL leaders and activists, who attacked protestors on January 15 and 23, withdrawal of a case filed by the DU administration against students in connection with intruding into the proctor’s office and resignation of DU proctor.

Nipiran Birodhi Shikkharti Brindya convener Masud Al Mahadi on Monday rejected the formation of three probe bodies following Chhatra League attacks on January 15 and 23 and vandalising DU proctor office on January 17.

While briefing media at DU, he said eight out of eleven teachers who were in the probe bodies attended a human chain on Sunday organised by Dhaka University Teachers Association where they sensed conspiracy against the university in ongoing movement, so how can they be neutral.

He said that they would burn effigy of proctor and hold a protest rally today to press home their demands.

Both left-leaning student alliance and students against repression brought out separate processions and locked gates of several buildings including arts and social science faculties in the morning.

At least eight leaders and activists of the SUST unit of Pragatishil Chhatra Jote were injured after a group of Chhatra League men launched an attack on them in the campus while they were picketing in support of the strike, said Samajtantrik Chhatra Front Sylhet city general secretary Rubaiyat Ruba.

A group of Chhatra League men led by joint general secretary of the university unit Subrata Pal and his followers Mashiur Rahman Bhuiyan and Mushfiqur Rahim Zia launched the attack in front of the main gate of the university at around 11:15am.
The BCL activist Mushfiqur alleged that the picketers were not allowing the common students to enter the campus in the name of student strike. ‘That was why we forced them away from the university entrance,’ he said.

When contacted, SUST proctor Zahir Uddin Ahmed admitted the attack and said they were looking into the incident.

An attack carried out by Chhatra League on the Pragatashil Chhatra Jote activists left two injured.

Left-leaning student activists said that in presence of university proctor Lutfor Rahman, some Chhatra League university unit former leaders along with former vice presidents Md Elias Hossain and Firoz Mahmud attacked them at the Shaheed Shamsuzzoha Chattar of the university.

Protesting against the attack, they held a brief rally from where they demanded exemplary punishment of attackers of DU students and the attack on them during the day.

Biplobi Chhatra Maitree central committee general secretary Dilip Roy, who sustained injuries said, Chhatra League leaders along with the university officials attacked them while they were observing the strike.

Elias Hossain denied the allegation and said that the progressive leaders misbehaved with the university proctor and other officials. ‘We just removed them from the place to ensure the smooth operation of the university bus service,’ he added.

RU proctor Lutfor Rahman told that they asked the progressive leaders to hold demonstration on campus peacefully and not halt the bus service.

He also said that none of the university officials attacked the progressive leaders.
Chhatra League activists carried out an attack on protesting students at Chittagong University and New Market crossing beside Chittagong City College that left two injured.

Chhatra League men beat up Samajtantrik Chhatra Front general secretary Ahsan Habib at CU when he was trying to organise a procession in favour of strike. Police barred the protestors from picketing.

CU police out post inspector Mohsin Majumdar denied the allegations saying no left-leaning students tried to picket in favour of strike.

A group of Chhatra League men chased away left-leaning activists from New Market area when the latter tried to picket at Chittagong City College.

Twenty-seven cultural organisations in a statement on Monday demanded punishment of Chhatra League attackers and said that DU authorities have failed to act responsibly by calling Chhatra League to deal with the protests
