Khaleda Zia files separate bail petition

Dhaka, Feb 22 (Just News): BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia today filed a separate bail petition with the High Court in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case in which she was convicted and sentenced to five years’ imprisonment.

Khaleda Zia submitted the 880-page bail petition through her lawyer mentioning 31 grounds on which the HC may consider her bail, one of her lawyers Advocate Sagir Hossain Leon, told.

The HC may hear the bail petition today after holding hearing on the petition filed on Tuesday challenging the lower court verdict that convicted and sentenced her in the corruption case.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Shahidul Karim is set to hear today whether it will accept her appeal filed challenging the verdict.

In the appeal, Khaleda Zia prayed to the HC so that it asks for the records of the case from the trial court, grants her bail until the plea is disposed of, and acquits her of the corruption charges.

After receiving the appeal on Tuesday, the HC bench fixed today (Thursday) for the hearing.

On February 8, Special Judge’s Court-5 of Dhaka sentenced Khaleda Zia to five years’ imprisonment after it found her and five other accused guilty in the case.
