7 BCL men to be suspended over DU student beating

Dhaka, Feb 27 (Just News): The Dhaka University authorities have recommend that seven of its students, all members of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), should be suspended for beating a student of Salimullah Muslim (SM) Hall of the university.

The students to be handed down the punishment are Omar Faruk of marketing department, Samiul Haque of sociology department, Ahsan Ullah of philosophy department, Ruhul Amin of mass communication and journalism department, Mehedi Hassan aka Himel of Urdu department, Fardin Admen of public administration department, and Ariful Islam of the Institute of Education and Research (IER).

Barring Ariful, who is the vice president of BCL SM Hall unit and a fourth year student, the accused are all second year students. They beat up Ehsan Rafique, a student of disaster management department, inside the dormitory on 6 February as he wanted his calculator back, something Omar had taken from him three months ago.

One of Ehsan's eyes have been seriously damaged, and his family members say they are planning to take him to India for better treatment.

The DU recommendation suggests Omar Faruk should be expelled permanently while his five batch-mates be suspended for two years.

Ariful will be suspended for a year for being an accomplice.

DU proctor AKM Golam Rabbani told newsmen that the disciplinary commiitee of the university made the recommendations on the basis of an investigation.

The recommendations will be placed in the upcoming meeting of the university's Syndicate.
