BNP to distribute leaflets Thursday for Khaleda Zia’s release

Dhaka, Feb 27 (Just News): The Bangladesh Nationalist Party on Tuesday announced countrywide leaflet distribution programme for Thursday demanding immediate release of the jailed party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia.

Announcing the programme at a briefing at the party’s central office, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said threatened that party leaders and activists would not sit idle if the government lingered Khaleda’s release.

He said that leaders and activists would distribute leaflets across the country.
Rizvi said that national-level leaders living in districts would distribute the leaflets in their respective districts.

After Khaleda was jailed for five years on February 8, BNP had announced series of programmes in phases including countrywide demonstrations, human chain, sit-in, token hunger strike, mass signature campaign, submission of memorandum to deputy commissioners and protest rallies in protest against conviction of Khaleda and demanding her ‘unconditional’ release.

Its latest programme was countrywide protests on Monday.

Dhaka special judge’s court-5 jailed Khaleda for five years in Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case and sent her to erstwhile Dhaka Central Jail in old Dhaka.

Asked why intensity of BNP’s movement for Khaleda’s release was decreasing, Rizvi said that the movement was peaceful and the programmes were not ‘innocent’ ones and they were carrying nonstop movement.

He said that police obstructed, attacked peaceful programmes, used water cannon and arrested party leaders and activists.

Rizvi threatened that they would not sit idle in rooms if the government lingered Khaleda’s release or resorted to any conspiracy.

Asked about the law minister’s comment that Khaleda’s release was delayed because of BNP’s lawyers, Rizvi said that it was not correct and senior lawyers were carrying out legal battle with all strength.

BNP leaders including Ataur Rahman Dhali, Ishtiaq Aziz Ulfat, Taiful Islam Tipu and Belal Ahmed, among others, were present.
