Congestion, transport crisis mar celebrations

Dhaka, Mar 23 (Just News): Lack of public transports, traffic diversions and traffic congestion centring celebration of the country’s graduation from a least developed country caused immense sufferings of Dhaka city dwellers on Thursday.

On the day, many buses and minibuses were used to carry participants for joining procession at nine city points and a cultural programme at Bangabandhu National Stadium inaugurated by prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

Transport owners alleged that some Bangladesh Chhatra League activists in the morning took many city service buses for taking participants to Gulistan.

A huge number of people were seen on roads looking for public transports since afternoon.

Some roads were closed down for vehicular movement to facilitate the participants of the programme.

While some areas were almost free of traffics then commuters suffered at some areas for traffic gridlock.

Number of public buses and minibuses were very few at areas including Farmgate, Kakrail, Karwan Bazar, Mirpur, Rampura, Mouchak, Malibagh, Saidabad and Jatrabari areas.

The Farmgate intersection was closed down at about 4:00pm while many people were seen waiting for buses on Mirpur routes.

Vehicular movement was restricted on roads at Paltan, Danik Bangla Intersection, Press club, Farmagate and Rokeya Sarani areas since Thursday noon to facilitate the participants of the processions and cultural programme.

As a result huge traffic congestion was seen at Gulistan, Motijheel and Mirpur areas.
