Withdraw Khulna police commissioner, Gazipur SP: BNP

Dhaka, May 3 (Just News): BNP today urged the Election Commission to immediately withdraw the Khulna metropolitan police commissioner and superintendent of police in Gazipur for creating level-playing field ahead of the upcoming elections in the two cities.

"Khulna police commissioner and Gazipur police supper have suddenly created volatile situation in the two cities. Their motives don't appear transparent to us. Their withdrawal is a must if the election commission wants free and fair polls in the two cities," Abdul Moeen Khan, a standing committee member of BNP told the Chief Election Commissioner KM Nurul Huda.

A four-member BNP delegation led by Moeen Khan met the chief election commissioner at his election commission office in Agargaon area of Dhaka this afternoon and placed the plea.

Responding to the BNP's demand, the CEC assured them of taking the issue under his consideration.

Earlier in the day, BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Rizvi Ahmed, at a press conference at the party's Nayapaltan central office, made the same allegation against the two police officials and also demanded their immediate withdrawal.

"Law enforcers are making a wholesale arrest of our leaders and activists and intimidating them in various ways. They (lawmen) are also working to drive out supporters of our candidates from two cities deliberately," Rizvi said.

He also said, "The Khulna police commissioner and Gazipur police superintendent must be withdrawn. Otherwise, it will be the elections of snatching votes in the two cities."

The BNP leader also reiterated their party's demand for the deployment of army in the two cities to bring back confidence in the voters in holding the polls in a fair and credible manner.

Rizvi alleged that the ministers and ruling party MPs are violating the election code of conduct repeatedly holding meetings with local administrations.

"The police administration has created an intimidating situation across the two cities at the behest of the two influential persons [KMP commissioner and SP of Gazipur]," he alleged.

The elections in the two cities are scheduled to be held on May 15.
