The deceased was identified as Abdul Mannan, 45, son of late Ali Hossain at Kandapara in Tangail municipal area, reports our Tangail correspondent quoting Sanjit Kumar Roy, superintendent of police (SP) in Tangail.

The “gunfight” took place between two groups of drug peddlers in Charabari area in the early hours today over dividing drugs and money, leaving Mannan dead on the spot, the police official said.

On information, a team of police recovered the body and sent it to Tangail General Hospital morgue for autopsy, he said.

Police recovered a foreign-made pistol and yaba tablets from the spot, he said.

Mannan was a listed drug peddler in the area and was an accused in six cases under Narcotics Act, he added.

Hossain was wanted in seven drug-related cases.

Acting on information that a gang of drug peddlers gathered in the area, a team of police conducted a drive there around 2:00am, said Mahmud Daud, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the OC claimed, the gangsters opened fire on them which forced the police to fire back in self-defence.

After the gunfight, police recovered the body of Jahangir and one revolver, four bullets, 135 Yaba pills and 25 bottles of Phensidyl from the scene, he said.

Two policemen were also injured in the incident, the OC added.
