3 quota reform leaders remanded

Dhaka, July 11 (Just News): A Dhaka metropolitan magistrate’s court on Tuesday remanded three quota reform movement leaders in police custody for two days for interrogation in two cases filed with Shahbag police station.

Metropolitan magistrate Abdullah Al Masud passed the order after police produced the three joint conveners of Bangladesh Sadharan Chhatra Adhikar Sangrakkhan Parishad – Faruk Hossain, Jasim Uddin Akash and Mashiur Rahman – before the court seeking them custody for seven days.

Jasim and Mashiur were remanded in a case filed for the attack on Dhaka University vice-chancellor’s residence and Faruk was remanded in another case filed on charge of attack on cops and vandalism of vehicles.

Faruk was sent to jail on July 3 after police showed him arrested in a case filed on April 11.

Sara Hossain and Jyotirmoy Barua submitted two petitions seeking bail of the three and cancelation of the remand prayers, mentoring that the students were mercilessly beaten and there was no ground to remand them in police custody.

Jasim, was sick and he was produced before the court and taken away with the help of two others.

Besides, Tariqul Islam, another arrested student, was not produced before the court on Tuesday and the court set July 17 for hearing police prayer for remand in custody.
On July 2, a group of Bangladesh Chhatra League activists beat up Tariqul near Dhaka University Central Library and handed him over to police.

He was later shown arrested in the case filed for the attack on the vice-chancellor’s house.

Tariqul and Jasim, held on July 2, were sent to jail on July 3 after detectives produced them before a court in connection with the case.

On July 2, another leader Muhammad Rashed Khan was remanded in police custody for five days after police arrested him at Bhasantek in Dhaka.

In February, students of different public universities and jobseekers launched a movement demanding reform of quota in the civil service recruitment.

On April 11, prime minister Sheikh Hasina in parliament announced that the quota system in public service recruitment would be abolished.

The government was, however, yet to implement the announcement issuing a gazette notification in this regard and the protesters started preparing for fresh protests. But they were attacked at the Dhaka University and Rajshahi University.
