Dhaka, July 12 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party leaders Abdul Moyeen Khan and Shawkat Mahmud on Thursday alleged that ruling Awami League-led government was frightened and therefore they were continuously repressing the opponents and all kinds of movement.
The government was intimidating and torturing the different thinking people to retain control of the country forever, they said at a discussion programme held at National Press Club in the capital.
Both the leaders said that no national election will be held without the release of jailed BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, also a former prime minister, and under this government.
People of the country will not allow the government to hold a national election under the government, where Khaleda Zia and BNP will not participate, said former minister Abdul Moyeen Khan.
‘Government has been torturing BNP leaders and activists, even foiled the peaceful programmes,’ he said.
‘The government has become so insecure,’ he said, adding that as a result, they attacked the quota reform activists.
‘The movement was logical and peaceful movement headed by the students of the country but the activists were being attacked, intimidated and tortured by Awami League’s student wing BCL and police,’ he said while chairing the programme organised by Doctors Association of Bangladesh.
He also said, ‘the government’s only aim to retain the power and for that they are not allowing any different thinking people and media.’
‘The media has lost its freedom as the government is controlling media,’ he said.
Senior journalist and BNP leader Shawkat Mahmud said the government had shown its insecurity by attacking quota reform activists.
He also said that the AL-led government forced the media to publish and broadcast the government’s success story but the government was not allowing them to work independently.
At the programme DAB president Azizul Haque and BNP chairperson adviser Forhad Halim Donar were addressed, among others.
