Attack on Mahmudur was assassination bid: BNP

Dhaka, July 23 (Just News): Bangladesh Nationalist Party secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Monday claimed that the attack on daily Amar Desh’s acting editor Mahmudur Rahman was carried out on court premises in Kushtia to ‘kill’ him.

He made the remark while addressing a demonstration in front of the National Press Club in Dhaka jointly organised by Bangladesh Federal Union of Journalists and Dhaka Union of Journalists to protest at the attack on Mahmudur reportedly by Chhatra League and Juba League activists on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Rights body Ain O Salish Kendra in a press release condemned the attack on Mahmudur. It demanded the attackers to stand trial, said the ASK release.

BFUJ faction president Ruhul Amin Gazi announced sit-in in Dhaka while demonstration in other parts of the country for July 25 in protests at the attack on Mahmudur.

He said he had phoned the home minister before the attack on Mahmudur Rahman seeking his help to ensure security of Mahmudur.

Fakhrul said the minister assured him of taking steps for safe exit of Mahmud from the court.

But Mahmudur was attacked in presence of Superintendent of Police, he lamented.
Fakhrul said the attack was preplanned and the pioneers of freedom of expression were becoming subjected to such attacks as the government was in opposition to freedom of expression.

He demanded immediate arrest of those responsible for the attack and taking legal action.

Fakhrul also demanded legal action against the police officials who were present during the attack.

Presiding over by BFUJ president Ruhul Amin Gazi, the demonstration was also addressed by journalist leaders Shaukat Mahmood, Abdul Hye Sikder, Syed Abdal Ahmed, Kader Gani Chowdhury and Shahidul Islam.
