Talk about gold scam useless: Muhith

Dhaka, July 24 (Just News): Finance minister AMA Muhith on Tuesday said discussions about mismatch of gold kept in the Bangladesh Bank’s vault are ‘useless’.

There is no problem with gold deposited in the central bank, he said in his first reaction following allegation of mismatch in quality and quantity of gold by customs intelligence last week.

Muhith was responding to questions asked by reporters at secretariat after the first working session of deputy commissioners’ conference, two days after he arrived in the country from abroad.

These are absolutely useless talking, said Muhith, adding that there were 953 kilograms of gold in the central bank’s vault.

Of those, only three kilogram is mixed gold, he said.

Answering whether a probe committee would be appointed, he said, the matter was yet to be finalised.

On July 18, state minister for finance and planning MA Mannan said next step about the reported gold scam would be taken after the arrival of finance minister.

He blamed improper communication between customs intelligence of the National Board of Revenue and the Bangladesh Bank for the mismatch in quality and quantity of gold in the central bank vault.
