JCD leader killed in Sylhet attack

Dhaka, Aug 11 (Just News): A leader of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) was killed and two others injured critically in an attack by unknown criminals in Sylhet city tonight.

The deceased Foyzul Haque Raju, 32, was former assistant publication secretary of the JCD city unit.

Brig Gen AKM Mahbubul Haque, director of Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital confirmed the death.

The two critically injured JCD members are undergoing treatment at the hospital, the hospital director said.

They were attacked by some members of a rival group of the same party in a gathering at the winner of Sylhet City Corporation election Ariful Haque Choudhury’s house in Kumarpara area in the city around 9:00pm.

An altercation between two fractions of JCD men ensued after thousands of BNP and JCD leaders and activists gathered in front of Ariful’s house to celebrate his victory in the city polls, Witnesses said.

The attackers snooped on a group of the party men, witnesses added.

The criminals fired at them and used sharp weapons during the attack, the correspondent reports quoting the witnesses.

Abdul Wahab, additional deputy commissioner (media) of Sylhet Metropolitan Police said that additional policemen have been deployed in the area to avoid any untoward incident.

BNP candidate Ariful Haque Choudhury was declared elected mayor of Sylhet on Saurday evening as he defeated his nearest rival Badar Uddin Ahmed Kamran of Awami League by 6,196 votes.
