Dhaka, Sep 10 (Just News): A dozen of road safety protesters, whose whereabouts remained unknown since law enforcers raided their houses in the capital’s Mohakhali and Tejgaon areas on September 5, were put on remand for two days each on Monday.
Earlier on the day, they were shown arrested and produced in court for allegedly spreading rumour during student protests demanding road safety that begun on July 29 and continued for ten days.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police on Monday afternoon in a press conference stated that they arrested the 12 ‘leaders and activists’, including of one of the lead propagators Tarek Aziz, on Sunday.
Metropolitan magistrate Nurunnahar Yasmin remanded each of the twelve for two days in connection with a case filed with Tejgaon industrial police on August 6.
Of the protesters, Tarek Aziz, Mehedi Hasan Rajib of Kishorganj, Mahfuz of Gazipur, Raihanul Abedin of Cumilla, Mohammad Tarek and Iftekhar Alam of Noakhali are students of Dhaka Polytechnic Institute while Al Amin and Jahirul Islam Hasib of Feni are university admission seekers.
Mujahidul Islam is a student of Bangladesh Textile University while Jahangir Alam is a student of Government Titumir College, Saifullah Bin Mansur is a student of Government Sadat College of Tangail and Gazi M Borhan Uddin of Sherpur is a student at Saic Institute of Medical Technology at Mirpur in Dhaka.
Only Tarek Aziz was remanded for two day more in connection with another case filed with Tejgaon Industrial Police Station under Section 57 of Information and Communication Act.
‘On September 9, 2018, they were arrested in the capital’s Tejkunipara area,’ the DMP statement reads.
The DMP in their portal stated that they seized 12 sets of uniforms, and 13 ID cards of different school and college, megaphone, three laptops, books of Islami Chhatra Shibir and magnifying glass, hammer and screwdriver, among others.
Announcement of the arrests came up a day after parents and guardians of the 12 students held a press conference at Crime Reporters’ Association office on Sunday and claimed their sons were in the custody of the detective branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.
Parents in the press conference said they had approached DB office following the day of ‘arrest’ and the officials concerned told them ‘the students would be produced before the court on September 7. But, they were not produced in the court even after four days.’
Mansur Rahman, father of Saifullah Bin Mansur, on Sunday complained that a police team launched a drive at Mohakhali and Tejgaon on September 5 and detained several students.
Students took to the streets on July 29 following the death of two students at Kurmitola, and the protests continued until first week of August.
