Goods transports on indefinite strike

Dhaka, Oct 7 (Just News): Owners and workers of goods transports started their work abstention on Sunday for an indefinite period across the country demanding amendments to Road Transport Act 2018.

Leaders of Bangladesh Goods Transport Owners and Workers’ Unity Council on Saturday in a meeting held at Tejgaon truck terminal in the capital announced their seven-point demand and the countrywide strike.

The council member secretary Md Tajul Islam said that no goods laden transport run across the country since 6:00am on Sunday.

The workers of goods transports blocked the road from Satrasta intersection to Tejgaon truck terminal area in the capital by keeping trucks and covered vans.

Meanwhile, transport workers took to the street in Mohammadpur and Bosila areas in the city.

Workers of passenger vehicles also joined them at some places in the city, said Md Tajul Islam.

Many passengers were also seen suffering due to lack of transport in the city.

Bangladesh Road Transport Workers’ Federation executive president, Shajahan Khan, also the shipping minister, told New Age on Sunday that he informed the authorities concerned about demand of goods transport owners and workers.

The council members demand that no case be filed for road accident under section 302 of Penal Code, cancelation of Tk 5 lakh fine and making all road accident-related cases bailable.

They also demand release of all arrested transport owners and workers, easy condition for getting heavy driving licences, an end to police harassment and overloading and truck terminals at different points.
