Rain-induced landslide, wall collapse claim 4 lives

Dhaka, Oct 14 (JustNews) : According to Patenga Meteorological Office, Chittagong has seen 28mm of rainfall 24 hours since 9am on Saturday

At least four people were killed in separate incidents of a landslide and wall collapse, following heavy rainfall in the port city of Chittagong.

The incidents took place early on Sunday.

Three people died in a landslide at Firoz Shah Colony area around 2:30am.

The deceased are Nurjahan Begum, 45, her two-and-a-half-year-old daughter Fazar-un-Nesa, and Bibi Johra, 65.

A team of fire fighters went to the site and recovered the bodies.

In another incident, a 45-year-old man named Nurun Nabi was killed when a wall collapsed on him at Rahman Nagar area around 1:30am.

Md Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Chittagong Fire Service and Civil Defence, confirmed the matter.

To avert landslide-related casualties, the Chittagong district administration has asked people at-risk of landslides to move to safer places.

Md Delwar Hossain, additional deputy commissioner (Revenue) told that the nearest schools have been declared shelters so that such people may take refuge.

According to the Chittagong District Administration, there are 28 hills, in the district, that are vulnerable to landslides.

The hills are owned by different individuals as well as government, autonomous and private organizations, including: Bangladesh Railway, the Public Works Department, Chittagong Wasa, and Chittagong City Corporation.

The district administration has so far listed 684 families who are living on these foothills.

According to Patenga Meteorological Office, 28mm of rainfall was recorded in Chittagong in the last 24 hours—till 9am on Sunday.
