SC order on Khaleda Zia’s leave to appeal petition Monday

Dhaka, Oct 28 (Just News): The Supreme Court today fixed tomorrow for passing an order on a leave-to-appeal petition filed by BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia challenging the High Court order that cleared the way for the lower court concerned to run the trial of Zia Charitable Trust n case in her absence.

A seven-member bench of the Appellate Division set the date after concluding hearing on the leave-to-appeal petition.

It depends the Supreme Court order whether the lower court concerned in Dhaka will deliver verdict in the graft case tomorrow, said Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali, a lawyer for Khaleda Zia.

Advocate AJ Mohammad Ali argued for Khaleda Zia while Advocate Khurshid Alam Khan appeared for the Anti-corruption Commission and Attorney General Mahbubey Alam represented the state.

A Dhaka court is scheduled to deliver judgment in Zia Charitable Trust Corruption case tomorrow.

The High Court on October 14, cleared the way for the Dhaka Court concerned to continue the trial proceedings of the case against Khaleda Zia in her absence through rejecting her revision petition.

Later on, Khaleda Zia filed the leave-to-appeal petition with the Supreme Court challenging the High Court order.

On September 20, Khaleda Zia was exempted from personal appearance before the court it and decided to continue the trial of the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case inside Old Dhaka Central Jail in her absence.

Khaleda Zia, accused in more than 34 cases, is currently serving a five-year prison term in Zia Orphanage Trust case.

The Anti-Corruption Commission had filed the Zia Charitable Trust graft case against Khaleda Zia and three others with Tejgaon Police Station in August, 2011. According to the case statement, the former prime minister and three others abused their power and raised funds for the trust from unknown sources.

The three others are Harris Chowdhury, political secretary to the then PM Khaleda Zia, Ziaul Islam Munna, assistant private secretary (APS) to Harris, and Monirul Islam Khan, APS to former Dhaka City Mayor Sadeque Hossain Khoka.
