Ensure voting right, release Khaleda Zia

Dhaka, Nov 6 (Just News): Jatiya Oikya Front leader Dr Kamal Hossain has urged the government to release all political prisoners, including BNP Chairperson begum Khaleda Zia, before the 11th general election.

“The people’s voting rights must be ensured too before the polls,” he told a public rally organized by the newly formed political alliance at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka on Tuesday.

“There is no rule of law in the country at the moment,” he said. “People are being arrested and harassed everywhere.

“It would have been still unacceptable if an elected government had done all these unlawful activities. So it’s obviously unacceptable from an unelected government. These are crimes.”

He said that the incumbent government would be held accountable for these.

Dr Kamal also noted that the country’s independence would become meaningless if the elections were not fair, and urged the people to guard the polling centres on the day of the vote to ensure impartial balloting.

He told the people: "Guarding voting centres means protecting the right to vote, and protecting your franchise means safeguarding your independence.

“You are the country’s real owners. You need to wake up to establish your ownership.”

Oikya Front members came together for the sake of a credible election and their decisions regarding that would be made in a unified manner, added the eminent jurist who also heads Gono Forum.

Addressing the rally, which was Oikya Front’s third since its formation last month, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir also announced the alliance’s future programs, which include their fourth rally in Rajshahi city on Friday.
