2 die in clash between AL factions in Dhaka

Dhaka, Nov 10 (Just News): Two youths have died in the middle of a chase and counter-chase between two factions of the Awami League in front of Mohammadpur Nobodoy Housing Society in Mohammadpur area of Dhaka.

The deceased are Sujon, 18, and Arif. The incident occurred on Saturday morning.

According to Sujon's friend Amin, a group of youths, upon the invitation of local leader Nur Alam, went to participate in the showdown of lawmaker Sadeq Khan when the latter was on his way to collect his nomination papers from the Dhanmondi Awami League office.

The youths used a pick-up van go to their destination. However, when the pick-up van reached the Mohammadpur Nobodoy Housing Society in Mohammadpur, they were obstructed by the supporters of lawmaker Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Amin said.

"The supporters were throwing brickbats at us," Amin said. "Panicked, we tried to get down from the pick-up van. At that time, two among us got run down by the van while the driver was trying to escape the spot."

Sujon, severely injured, was admitted to Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH), where the duty doctors declared him dead around 12pm, confirmed Sub-Inspector of DMCH police outpost Bachchu Mia.

The other injured, Arif, died after getting admitted to Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College and Hospital, confirmed Mohammadpur police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Jamaluddin Mir.

"We know of his [Arif's] death, but we are not clear about the circumstances surrounding his death," Mir said.

Meanwhile, Adabar police station OC SM Kawser said he had heard of such an incident occurring in Mohammadpur area on Saturday morning, but the situation is under control at the moment.

"Nobody has made an official complaint yet," he said. "No one has been detained in connection with the incident."
