Police in our control, not arresting anyone without cause: CEC

Dhaka, Nov 24 (Just News) : There is a level playing field in the upcoming polls and the police is adhering to the Election Commission’s (EC) directives, said Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Nurul Huda.

He also said that police is not arresting anyone without valid cause.

“Everything is taking place according to the law,” he told the media on Saturday (Nov 24) after the Election Commission’s meeting with the executive magistrates.

“The police is in our control and will not be doing anything without our instruction,” he added.
When asked whether police was taking instructions from both the EC and the government, Huda said, “There are no instructions from the government. All election related issues are regulated by us and instructions are being followed accordingly.”

“It is the EC’s responsibility to conduct the polls,” he said in response to a question and added that the executive magistrates will be there to provide support to the returning officers as needed.

When asked about keeping the media out of today’s meeting, Huda said.

The decision to keep the media out of today’s meeting was not a right decision, the CEC said and added that journalists will be allowed in a similar meeting, scheduled to be held on Sunday (Nov 24),.

Earlier, the CEC met with the executive magistrates of Dhaka and Mymensingh division and Cumilla district to brief them on the electoral code of conduct prior to the polls which are slated for Dec 30.

The meeting was presided over by EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed with Election Commissioners Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Kabita Khanam and Md Shahadat Hossain Chowdhury.
