Police drive to victimise villager kills another

Chittagong, Jan 26 (Just News): A team of plainclothes tried to implicate a person in charges with possession of yaba pills, entangled in a clash with villagers and shot one of them dead.

Saiful Islam, 22, son of Shamsul Alam of Telipara village under Bhatiari union, lost his life in the incident that took place 10:00pm on Wednesday.

According to the police, the team of Sitakunda police station went to raid the village beyond the knowledge of its officer-in-charge.

Villagers said the police team including sub-inspector Nazmul Huda, constable Abul Kashem, and Ansar man Ismail Hossain came to their village, some 20 kilometres far from the Sitakunda police station, by a microbus.

The police team stopped a man near a shop and claimed to have found yaba table in his possession.

The man, Md Faruk Hossain, who is a contractor of workers' recruitment for shipbreaking companies, protested at it. He was joined by his brother Mohammad Parvez, Faruk told Prothom Alo on Thursday.

On hearing hue and cry, villagers came to the scene and wanted to know who the plainclothes people were, he added.

Faruk said SI Nazmul Huda, introducing himself as a policeman opened fire, at one stage, on victim Saiful Islam from a point-blank range. The policemen then fled the scene.

Asked about the incident, Chittagong superintendent of police Noor-e-Alam Mina told Prothom Alo that he came to know that a team of police conducted a raid in a remote village to detain yaba customers and accused but they did not apprise the officer-in-charge of it.

The three policemen have already been withdrawn from their duties, the police officer added.

A three-member probe body, led by additional superintendent of police of Chittagong (North) Moshiuddoula Reza, has also been formed to investigate the incident.

Shujan (Shushaner Jonno Nagorik or Citizens for Good Governance) Chittagong district secretary Akhtar Kabir Chowdhury told that a number of law enforcers are now getting involved with crimes as they are often used by the ruling party to serve its political purposes.

He also said that the policemen are misusing power as there is hardly any accountability and transparency in forces.

According to the lawyer, democracy and good governance have to be ensured to get rid of this kind of situation.
