Chamber judge stays Khaleda Zia’s bail

Dhaka, May 29 (Just News): The chamber judge of Supreme Court on Tuesday stayed the High Court order that granted jailed BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia bail for six months in two Cumilla cases.

Following a petition by the government, justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed the order.

Hours after a High Court bench granted bail for six months to Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) chairperson Khaleda Zia in two Cumilla cases on Monday, the government filed the petition with the chamber judge seeking a stay on the HC order.

The High Court will pass its orders on Thursday on the bail petitions filed by BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia in two other defamation cases.

The regular bench of the Appellate Division will hold the hearing on the bail on Thursday.

Attorney general Mahbubey Alam and deputy attorney general Ekramul Haque took part in the hearing in favour of the government.

“The chamber judge stayed the HC order that granted Khaleda Zia the bail in Cumilla cases,” Ekramul said.

A special judge court sentenced former prime minister and BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia to seven years in jail and sent her to jail on 8 February last.

Khaleda Zia has been kept at the abandoned central jail at Nazimuddin Road in the capital.
