Khaleda Zia sits with BNP policymakers

Dhaka, Dec 10 (Just News): BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia sat in a meeting with her party's standing committee members tonight (Sunday night) to discuss the country's latest political situation and by-polls to the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC).

The meeting began at the BNP chief's Gulshan office around 9:10 pm.

BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said their party policymakers will discuss the country's overall situation and the party's organisational issues at the meeting.

However, a BNP standing committee member, wishing anonymity, told UNB that the meeting was mainly convened to take the opinions of the party policymakers about its possible mayoral candidate for the DNCC by-polls.

He said the BNP leaders will also talk about Rangpur city polls and work out a strategy to ensure the victory of the BNP mayoral candidate there.

A leader close to Khaleda Zia said the BNP chief wants to nominate Tabith Awal for vying for the DNCC mayoral post. "She'll take opinions of the party standing committee members at the meeting in this regard."

Tabith Awal, the eldest son of business tycoon and BNP vice-chairman Abdul Awal Mintoo, contested the 2015 DNCC election as a mayoral candidate on BNP ticket, and boycotted it halfway through bringing the allegation of vote rigging by the ruling party men.

The DNCC mayoral post fell vacant with the death of Annisul Huq on November 30 last.

The Election Commission has the legal obligation to complete the by-election within 90 days after the post fell vacant
