AL to ‘stop’ BNP, taking control of streets: Nasim

Dhaka, Sep 29 (Just News): The ruling party will not leave any scope for the opposition BNP to hold street protests in October, the Bangladesh Awami League (AL)-led 14-Party Alliance spokesperson said Saturday.

The AL's alliance partners, Mohammad Nasim added, will take control of the streets in October, so that the Bangladesh Nationalist Party cannot create any situation ahead of next parliamentary polls.

“We won’t make any concession to the BNP-Jamaat [alliance]. Their black [evil] hands will be broken,” he told a meeting of workers of the 14-party alliance at Mohanagar Nattya Mancha in the city.

Nasim, also health minister and AL presidium member, announced that the alliance will hold divisional rallies in Rajshahi on 9 October and in Khulna on 13 October. It will hold a public rally in Natore on 10 October.

He asked the leaders and activists of the alliance to remain alert against what he called as 'conspiracy of the BNP-Jamaat [alliance]'.

“The BNP has hired the leaders who have no principles. The victory in the election is not possible taking help from the hired leaders,” Nasim said in an oblique reference to Kamal Hossain and Badruddoza Chowdhury who initiated a national unity process.

Nasim said the 11th parliament election will be held in December under an administration of prime minister Sheikh Hasina.

AL presidium member Amir Hossain Amu expressed apprehensions that the BNP and the Jamaat may carry out 'arson attacks' and unleash other forms of violence to foil the next elections. He alleged that the opposition did ahead of the 5 January elections.

Amu called upon the leaders and activist of the ruling camp to stay alert about possible damage to roads and rail links.

About the BNP's demonstration, Workers Party president and social welfare minister Rashed Khan Menon said the 14-Party Alliance has no contest with a party which cannot take to the street without permission from the police.

"We were told that there has been a unity to restore freedom of expression... With who is the unity. Don't you read history?" he said dwelling on the BNP's joining of the National Unity Process initated by Gano Forum chief Kamal Hossain.
