Dhaka, Sep 30 (Just News): Ruling Awami League on Sunday said the government could not give in to the demands of Bangladesh Nationalist Party hours after the main opposition party placed the demands at a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka.
Awami League general secretary Obaidul Quader, after a meeting of the party secretaries at the Dhanmondi office of the party president, said at a press conference that the next general election would be held in accordance with the constitution.
The Election Commission would hold the national election in free, fair and credible manner and a mini cabinet headed by prime minister Sheikh Hasina would assist the Election Commission, Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said.
Referring to the demands of BNP, Quader said there were about three months in hands for holding national election and within this short period it would not be possible to fulfil the demands and amend the constitution.
BNP placed seven-point demand, namely release of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia and withdrawal of all cases against her before the announcement of schedule for 11th parliamentary polls, withdrawal of cases against BNP’s acting vice-chairman Tarique Rahman and all political prisoners, dissolution of parliament, resignation of the government and formation of an election-time neutral government through consulting all political parties, deployment of armed forces with magistracy power in each polling centre to ensure fair polls and scrapping the move to use EVMs.
Quader also said his party would hold a week-long mass contact programme across the country from October 1 to 7 and would distribute leaflets in the capital.
Joint general secretaries of Awami League Dipu Moni, Jahangir Kabir Nanak, Abdur Rahman, central leaders Ahmad Hossain, Afzal Husain, SM Kamal Hossain, Raymond Areng, Biplab Barua, Marufa Akter Poppy and others attended the press conference.
