Barrister Mainul Hosein arrested

Dhaka, Oct 22 (Just News): Detective Branch of police on Monday night picked up Barrister Mainul Hosein, an organiser of newly-floated opposition political alliance Jatiya Oikya Front, from the residence of the Front’s top leader ASM Abdur Rob.

‘Barrister Mainul Hosein has been arrested from Uttara in a case filed against him in Rangpur,’ said Detective Branch deputy commissioner (north) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, Mashiur Rahman.

Mainul went to Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal faction president ASM Rob’s residence at Uttara around 9:30pm and Detective Branch police picked Mainul Hosein from Rob’s residence around 10:10 pm, said a staff of the JSD leader.

Several cases were filed against Mainul at places, including in Dhaka, Rangpur, Jamalpur and Brahmanbaria, for making ‘defamatory remark’ on journalist Masuda Bhatti during a TV talk-show on Tuesday.

Yesterday, the High Court granted bail for five months to Barrister Mainul in two defamation cases.

An HC bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz and Justice Mohi Uddin Shamim passed the order after hearing separate petitions filed by him.

It came hours after two courts issued arrest warrants against Mainul after separate defamation cases were filed against him for hurling abusive words at journalist Masuda Bhatti during a television talk show.

In Dhaka, Masuda Bhatti filed a case with the Court of Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Muhammad Asaduzzaman Noor. The other case was filed by convener of Jamalpur Jubo Mohila League Farzana Yasmin Lita with the Court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Soleiman Kabir.

After taking the charges into cognisance, the Dhaka court issued the arrest warrant and directed the officer-in-charge of Sutrapur police to submit a report on execution of the order by November 22.
