‘If Messi was Brazilian he would have a World Cup by now’

Dhaka, Jun 14 (Just News): Brazil legend Roberto Carlos has rubbed salt on Argentina and Lionel Messi’s wounds, saying that the mercurial No. 10 would already have a World Cup under his belt if he was Brazilian.

Messi came close to achieving his dream at Brazil in 2014, when the Albiceleste made it to the final of the coveted tournament four years ago. Germany won the cup, beating Lionel Messi’s Argentina in the final by 1-0.

Roberto Carlos, who won the World Cup with Brazil in 2002, told TyC Sports: “If Messi was Brazilian, he would be a world champion.”

Messi faced unfair criticism and even went on to retire from the national team after Argentina’s woeful record in the final continued as they lost twice to Chile in the final of the 2015 and 2016 Copa America tournament.

Messi carried Argentina to the 2018 World Cup with a hat-trick in the final qualifier against Ecuador. Argentina will once again be heavily depending on their talisman to get them through to the final at the Russia World Cup.

Brazil themselves are one of the favourites of this World Cup as coach Tite managed to build a team that showcased both balance and charisma. Carlos remained hopeful of Brazil's chances and with stars like Neymar, Coutinho and Gabriel Jesus, this could very well be Brazil's tournament.
