Bangladesh lose to India by two-run in U-19 Asia Cup semis

Dhaka, Oct 4 (Just News): Bangladesh U-19 team’s hope of qualifying for their maiden Asia Cup final ended agonisingly on Thursday when they conceded a two-run defeat against India in the semi-final match at the Sher-e Bangla National Stadium.

Bangladesh needed only three runs in four overs with one-wicket in their hand but a terrible mix-up between Rakibul Hasan and Minhazur Rahman saw the hosts all out for 170 runs in 46.2 overs after they bowled out India for 172 runs.

Middle-order batsman Shamim Hossain struck 59 off 81 balls and shared 74-run with Akbar Ali made 45 off 63 balls, for the sixth wicket as Bangladesh appeared to have recovered from 65-5 to close in on win.

But despite having three wickets with just 12 runs to win, Bangladesh conceded another narrow defeat over India which came within a week of senior team losing to the same opponents in a last-ball thriller in Asia Cup final in UAE.

Earlier, Shoriful Islam bagged 3-16 while Mrittunjoy Chowdhury, Rishad Hossain and Towhid Hridoy picked up two wickets each as Bangladesh dismissed India for 172 in 49.3 overs.

Bangladeshi top-order had to face the music against Indian bowlers as left-arm pacer Mohit Jangra and left-arm spinner Siddharth Desai shared five wickets to take away the initial momentum from Bangladesh.

Jangra dismissed both the openers Sajid Hossain (two) and Prantik Nawroz Nabil (six) before the end of the seventh over while Desai chipped in with three middle-order wickets of Mahmudul Hasan (25), Towhid Hridoy (eight) and Rishad Hossain (two).

Harsh Tyagi dismissed Akbar to break the solid sixth wicket stand and India were able to hold their nerves till the end to clinch a hard fought victory to make their way to final.

Earlier, India got off to a solid start despite losing their inform opener Devdutt Padikkal (one) in the third over as Yashasvi Jaiswal (37) and Anuj Rawat (35) added 66 runs for the second wicket.

Bangladeshi bowlers soon got their foot back in the contest as they bagged four wickets in eight runs to reduce India 77-5 but 59-run sixth wicket stand between Sameer Choudhary and Ayush Badoni helped them to cross 150-run mark.

However soon after their dismissal, Bangladesh didn’t take long time to bowl out India as they dismissed their last five wickets for just 36 runs.
