Call for peaceful political activities, fair election, free press

M Mushfiqul Fazal from Washington, Oct 31 (Just News): The United States on Tuesday said that all Bangladeshis, regardless of party affiliation, should be able to safely engage in peaceful political activities.

The spokesperson of the US State Department, Heather Nuert made this remark on reply to a question about attack on the former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s motorcade.

BNP Chairperson’s motorcade came under attack on Dhaka-Chittagong highway in Feni Saturday afternoon when she was en route to visit Rohingya refugee camp in Cox’s Bazar.

Ruling party activists damaged nearly 30 vehicles, including journalists and leaders and activists of BNP who were going with Khaleda Zia. Most of them had seriously injured.

In reply to a written question asked by the JustNewsbd, the spokesperson said “the United States and Bangladesh share a long history of cooperation and a vision for a tolerant, nonviolent, democratic Bangladesh that serves as a bridge for commerce between South and Southeast Asia and an anchor for stability and prosperity in the region.”

All Bangladeshis, regardless of party affiliation, should be able to safely engage in peaceful political activities, she added.
