After US, UK issues travel alert
Justnews -
Dhaka, Jan 6 (Just News): The UK government has asked its citizens to remain vigilant and minimise their exposure to certain areas in view of security threats during the Bishwa Ijtema in Tongi near Dhaka city.

“There is a heightened threat of further terrorist attacks. Attacks could be indiscriminate although foreigners, in particular westerners, may be directly targeted,” read the latest travel alert issued by the foreign and commonwealth office (FCO).

It said crowded areas and places where westerners are known to gather may be at higher risk of attack. “You should minimise your exposure to these areas, consider your movements carefully and take appropriate security precautions,” according to the advice.

It referred to the Bishwa Ijtema, the annual congregation of India-based Tablighi Jamaat, which will be held beside the Turag river in Tongi in two phases --from 13 to15 January and 20 to 22 January.

The travel alert, dated 6 January, pointed out that there would be traffic disruption on the roads adjoining the Ijtema venue.

The UK government also mentioned that security at Dhaka airport “does not meet some international security requirements”.

Just a day before (5 January), the US statement had also issued a warning for its citizens against travelling Bangladesh mentioning that US government personnel face “potential threat” in Bangladesh.
