Chhatra League activists beat up quota reformist at DU

Bangladesh Chhatra League activists have allegedly beaten up Hasan Al Mamun, the convener of Bangladesh General Students’ Rights Protection Council (BGSRPC), in front of Dhaka University (DU) Central Library.

Mamun claimed the the incident took place on the university campus around 12:30pm on Monday.

However, leaders of Chhatra League, the student wing of ruling Awami League, have rejected the allegation.

Mamun alleged that a group of about 20 Chhatra League activists swooped on him when he was organizing a procession towards the vice-chancellor’s office to submit a memorandum, containing their demands regarding the upcoming DU Central Students’ Union (Ducsu) and hall union elections.

Mamun and other leaders of BGSRPC, which had spearheaded the movement to get the public service quota system reformed last year, later met with DU Proctor Prof Golam Rabbani and demanded punishment of the attackers.

Prof Rabbani said they would look into the matter and take appropriate measures after receiving a written complaint.

BGSRPC Joint Convener Nurul Hoque Nur said that Mamun was received primary treatment for his injuries.

When contacted, Chhatra League’s DU unit President Sonjit Chandra Das said no activist from the organization was involved in the alleged attack. He claimed that the incident could have been the result of a factional dispute within BGSRPC.

However, media reports quoted Mamun as saying that the Chhatra League activists who attacked him were led by Raisul Islam, vice-president of Chhatra League’s Surya Sen Hall unit.

The quota reform movement leader also alleged that he was attacked as BGSRPC has decided to field candidates in the Ducsu polls, slated for March 11.
