Khirshapat mango gets GI recognition

The Khirshapat of Chapainawabganj, one of the most popular varieties of Mango which is popularly known as Himsagar, has got Geographical Indication (GI), reports state news agency BSS.

Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun formally handed over the certificate to Modon Gopal Saha, director of Horticulture Research Center (HRC), at a programme at the industries ministry on Sunday (Jan 27).

Modon Gopal received the certificate on behalf of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI).

With this, Khirshapat has become the third product after hilsa and jamdani to get the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.

The development comes after the BARI applied for GI certification for the mango variety in February in 2017 on behalf of the growers of Chapainawabganj, one of the main mango-producing districts.

Meanwhile, the BARI has applied for GI recognition for two others --Ashwina and Langra mango, according to the industries ministry.
