Banking sector hostage to certain quarters: CPD

Bangladesh’s banking sector is hostage to certain people and organizations, and is going through a fragile situation, Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya has said.

A distinguished fellow with the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Debapriya made the comment while addressing a program organized by CPD on the proposed banking commission, on Saturday.

“The banking sector is hostage to certain people and organizations. In the given situation, we see progress in the process of forming a banking commission, which is encouraging, and we feel happy," said Debapriya.

To form the commission, there have been political consent and blessings from the highest authorities, and it has come as a wise decision, said the economist.

After the Hall-Mark Group scam in 2012, we suggested forming a banking commission to rein in bad loans, and bring discipline in the sector, he added.
