CPJ condemns Dhaka court’s decision to confiscate assets of journalist Kanak

The Committee to Protect Journalists has strongly condemned the court order to confiscate the assets of journalist Kanak Sarwar in connection with a Digital Security Act case.

Besides, CPJ also asked the Bangladesh government to stop such kind of unjustified punishment immediately.

CPJ Asia made this reaction in a tweet message on Tuesday following the order of a Dhaka court given against the US expatriate journalist Kanak Sarwar.

In tweet message, CPJ says, “Amid the ongoing retaliatory detention of Nusrat Shahrin Raka, sister of exiled journalist Kanak Sarwar, CPJ strongly condemns a Dhaka court’s decision directing law enforcement to confiscate Sarwar’s assets.”

This unjustified punishment must cease immediately, it added.

Meanwhile, a Dhaka court has directed the law enforcers to confiscate the assets of journalist Kanak Sarwar and Major (retd) Delwar Hossain in connection with a Digital Security Act case.

Dhaka’s Cyber Tribunal Judge Mohammad Ash Shams Joglul Hossain passed the order, asking to submit a report in this regard within December 13.

On June 30, Shahbagh police Sub-Inspector Mohammad Russel Molla, also investigation officer of the case, submitted a charge sheet to the court against the accused.

Later, the court issued warrant orders against the two fugitives taking the charge sheet into cognizance on November 2.

On the other hand, Nusrat Shahrin Sarkar, sister of journalist Konak Sarwar, has been arrested on another charge of spreading false, provocative statements against important government officials using digital media.

Two separate cases have also been filed against her.
