Veteran journalist and writer Abdul Gaffar Choudhury died at a hospital in the United Kingdom on Thursday.
He was 87.
‘Journalist Abdul Gaffar Choudhury died at about 6:40am UK local time while undergoing treatment at a hospital in London,’ said Ekushey award winning journalist Swadesh Roy who has close contact with the family of Gaffar Choudhury in the UK.
Gaffar Choudhury was born at village Ulania of Mehendiganj upazila in Barisal in 1934.
He graduated from Dhaka University in 1959 and later moved to the United Kingdom on in 1974.
Gaffar is best known for writing the lyrics of ‘Amar Bhaier Rakte Rangano’ which is the most widely celebrated song commemorating the Bengali Language Movement.
Abdul Gaffar Choudhury worked as a journalist in different national newspapers in Dhaka.
During the War of Independence in 1971, he worked for Joy Bangla, Jugantar and Anandabazar Patrika.
He wrote more than 35 five books.
Some of his notable works include — Danpithe Shawkat, Chandrodwiper Upakhyan, Nam Na Jana Bhore, Nil Jamuna, Shesh Rajanir Chand, Polashi Thekey Dhanmondi, and Bastobotar Nirikhey.
