Shahidul Alam needs immediate treatment: family

Dhaka, Aug 22 (Just News): Detained internationally acclaimed photographer Shahidul Alam needs immediate medical treatment as he is suffering from breathing difficulties and eyesight problems, and has pain in the jaw and gums, say his family.

Shahidul’s wife Rahnuma Ahmed, also anthropologist, and his colleague and journalist Saydia Gulrukh on Wednesday appealed to the government, more specifically the jail authorities, to ensure immediate medical treatment for Shahidul Alam shifting him to a hospital.

They made the call in a joint statement after visiting Shahidul Alam at Dhaka Central Jail at Keraniganj marking the Eid-ul-Azha.

Shahidul did not have any such health-related complaints before he was taken into police custody on August 5, they said in the statement.

Shahidul Alam was arrested on August 5 night, few hours after he had given an interview to Doha-based television channel Al Jazeera on the student protests for road safety.

On the following day a Dhaka court granted the police to take him to the custody for interrogation in a case filed under Section 57 of Information and Communication Technology Act with Ramna police station.

He was sent to jail on August 12 after he was produced before the court at the end of his remand period.
