New CJ vows to try to uphold balance among three organs

Dhaka, Feb 4 (Just News) : The newly-appointed chief justice, Syed Mahmud Hossain, said on Sunday that he would try to uphold the balance among the three organs of the state.

The chief justice said that a country could only advance towards development by upholding mutual cooperation among the three organs — legislative, executive and judiciary.

‘Lack of balance among the organs destroys the development,’ he said.

The chief justice also called for enactment of law for appointing Supreme Court judges according to the constitution in the present context.

He said he would do whatever possible on his part to firmly establish the rule of law and justice for the people.

Mahmud Hossain made the remarks after attorney general Mahbubey Alam and Supreme Court Bar Association president Zainul Abedin felicitated him at a compact courtroom.

The chief justice asked SC judges to discharge their duties to protect and preserve the constitution.

‘If the judges perform their duties following their oath to protect and preserve the constitution, then there is no need to frame new code of conduct.’

He also sought cooperation from the Supreme Court Bar Association to reduce backlog of cases.

He also asked the lawyers for not to seek unreasonable adjournment of hearing of cases.

The chief justice said he would take step to increase SC budget, number of judges proportionate to cases, and establish national judicial academy for their training.

Mahmud Hossain was sworn in as new chief justice by president Abdul Hamid at a ceremony at Bangabhaban on Saturday evening.

Mahmud Hossain, the 2nd most senior judge of the Appellate Division, was appointed as the 22nd chief justice of Bangladesh by the president Friday superseding most senior judge Md Abdul Wahhab Miah.

Justice Wahhab had been acting as chief justice since October 3, 2017, when chief justice SK Sinha was allegedly sent on forced leave.

Justice Wahhab resigned Friday citing ‘unavoidable personal reasons,’ shortly after the government announced the appointment of Mahmud Hossain as the new chief justice.
