Coronavirus: Confirmed cases soar to 2,37,661 in Bangladesh

Bangladesh’s officially confirmed coronavirus cases rose to 2,37,661 on Friday with the detection of 2,772 new patients in the last 24 hours.

The health authorities also announced the death of 28 patients during this period, bringing the death tally to 3,111.

At a regular online, Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), unveiled results of testing 12,614 samples.

The number of tests has come down but cases continue to rise.

Prof Nasima said the number of newly-recovered patients is 2,176. So far, 1,35,136 coronavirus patients have recovered.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18.

Covid-19 cases will likely see a surge in the coming week as thousands of people have left the cities to travel to their village homes to celebrate Eid-ul-Azha, the second largest festival of the Muslims.

People were seen grossly violating physical distancing and health guidelines at many marketplaces and during their journeys.
