Coronavirus: Bangladesh reports 50 new deaths

Bangladesh confirmed 50 more deaths from Coronavirus in the last 24 hours until Tuesday morning, the highest since July 26.

Less than 80 deaths were reported in the last three days. The death tally now stands at 3,234.

“The mortality rate has gone up to 1.33 percent,” Prof Dr Nasima Sultana, Additional Director General of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), told a regular online briefing.

Meanwhile, 1,918 new cases were detected after testing 7,712 samples. The daily infection rate for Tuesday was 24.87 percent.

Bangladesh reported its first coronavirus cases on March 8 and the first death on March 18. Currently, the officially confirmed cases stand at 2,44,020.

So far, 139,860 people have recovered – 1,955 of them in the last 24 hours. The health authorities say 57.31 percent of the patients have recovered.

Among the deceased, 2,504 are men and 680 women.

However, more than 1,500 of the deceased are aged above 60 years, official data show.

Among the newest victims, 35 were aged between 51 and 70 years. Forty-four of them were male and six female.

According to DGHS, 0.56 percent of the deceased are aged below 10 years, 0.99 percent between 11 and 20, 2.69 percent between 21 and 30, 6.56 percent between 31 and 40, 13.85 percent between 41 and 50, 28.76 percent between 51 and 60 and highest 46.6 percent of the deceased aged above 60 years.

The death rate in Dhaka and Chattogram divisions declined further on Tuesday.

"So far, 47.9 percent have died in Dhaka, 23.96 percent in Chattogram, 6.12 percent in Rajshahi, 7.33 percent in Khulna, 3.9 percent in Barishal, 3.83 percent in Rangpur and 2.16 percent died in Mymensingh division," Dr Nasima said.

Since March, 2,549 men and 685 women have died of coronavirus.

During the last 24 hours, 29 died in Dhaka, five in Chattogram, four in Khulna, five in Rajshahi, four in Rangpur and three others died in Sylhet, Barishal and Mymensingh divisions.

Currently, 18,491 are in isolation while 54,116 are home and institutionally quarantined.
