Covid-19: 34 die, 2,766 new cases in 24hrs

Bangladesh continues to record more than 2,500 Covid-19 fresh cases yet after cancelling virtual health bulletin, saying that the coronavirus situation in the country has improved and authorities find the briefing “unnecessary” considering the current situation.

According to the press release, issued by Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) on Friday afternoon, 2,766 people have tested positive in the last 24 hours, reaching a total of 271,881 infected.

At the same time, 34 people died in the last 24 hours, taking the death toll to 3,591.

Interestingly, the positive percentage rate is 21.54%, suggesting that the idea of introducing fees for the Covid 19 tests in the country could not be that much fruitful.

The DGHS had said that they were introducing the fees so that those who don’t need to undergo tests could refrain from conducting tests and only the symptomatic patients would conduct tests on time. They also said that they are looking forward to increasing the positivity rate significantly.

But when the fees were introduced the positivity rate was 21.26% on July 3, and it has increased barely, reaching 21.54% right now.

In the meantime, some 1,752 patients recovered, taking the total recovered to 156,623, at a recovery rate of 57.60%.

The DGHS press release mentioned that of the deceased, 28 were men and six women.

Moreover, 18 of them were from Dhaka, two from Chittagong, two from Rangpur, one each from Khulna and Barisal, and four each from Rajshahi and Sylhet divisions.

Thirty-three of the deceased died in different hospitals and one at home.

Of the deceased, two were aged between 31 and 40, four were in the 41-50 years range, six in 51-60 years and 22 were above 60.

Bangladesh confirmed the first Covid-19 case on March 8, and the first death from the coronavirus on March 18.
