Case filed against Haji Selim’s son for ‘attacking Navy official’

A case was filed against Irfan Selim, son of Dhaka-7 lawmaker Haji Selim, on charge of "attacking" Lt Wasif Ahmed Khan of Bangladesh Navy in Dhanmondi area of Dhaka last night.

Lt Wasif filed the case with Dhanmondi Police Station last night, naming four accused including Irfan Selim (37) and two to three unnamed persons, Officer-in-Charge of the police station Ikram Ali Mian told The Daily Star.

The other three named accused are AB Siddique Dipu (45), Md Zahid (35) and Md Mizanur Rahman (30).

Irfan Selim is a councilor of ward 30 of Dhaka South City Corporation.

According to the case statement, a private car hit Lt Wasif's motorcycle in Dhanmondi as he and his wife were returning to their Mohammadpur residence from Nilkhet around 7:45pm yesterday.

Some people came out of the car and verbally abused him and his wife and left the place.

When the car stopped at a nearby signal, Lt Wasif knocked the window of the car and introduced himself, after which the passengers got off the car again.

They physically attacked Lt Wasif and immediately went away, leaving the car behind, the case statement said.

On duty police rescued Lt Wasif and detained the driver along with the car.

After receiving primary treatment, Lt Wasif was sent to Dhaka Combined Military Hospital.

Deputy Commissioner (Ramna) Sajjadur Rahman, who visited the spot this morning, said police have collected the footage of CCTV cameras installed nearby and are going over them now.

Asked whether they took any measure to arrest the accused, the DC said drives are on to arrest Irfan and other accused.
