Rangpur Gang Rape: PBI seeks remand for ASI Raihan

The Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) has presented Assistant Sub-Inspector Raihan, the prime accused in a gang rape case, before a court in Rangpur and asked for a remand order to further interrogate him.

PBI took the accused to the court premises around 4pm on Thursday amid tight security and asked the Senior Judicial Magistrate to issue a seven-day remand.

However, the court will decide on the matter on November 4, fixing it to be the next remand hearing date.

Journalists barred, police assaults photo journalists

Police have reportedly barred journalists from entering the court premises using force and assaulted at least three photojournalists when they tried to photograph the accused ASI Raihan.

Three photojournalists, Ali Haider Rony from Ekushey TV, Rafi from Ekattor, and Munir from GTV among others were injured after being shoved down the stairs of the court gate.

The journalists alleged, the policemen involved also shut the collapsible gate at the entrance of the court and treated the photojournalists with extreme disrespect.

Earlier on Wednesday, the accused, Detective Branch of Police (DB) ASI Raihanul Islam alias Raju, was shown arrested around 9pm, confirmed PBI Superintendent of Police (SP) Jakir Hossain.

He was earlier taken into custody upon being charged with raping and assisting the gang rape of a ninth grade girl in Rangpur city.

Besides, two accused in the alleged gang rape have already given their confessional statements under section 164 of the Code of Criminal Procedure before the Rangpur Chief Judicial Magistrate Court on Wednesday evening.

Police initially took ASI Raihanul into custosdy after the girl accused him of raping her and assisting in her gang rape, that took place on Sunday.

After being identified by the schoolgirl, gang rape accused Babul and Azad gave their confessional statements before the court around 4pm.

On Sunday, the rape survivor’s father, Aynal Hossain, filed a case with Haragach police station over the incident. PBI took charge of the case afterwards.
