Indian student found dead at private medical college’s hostel in Rajshahi

An Indian student of a private medical college in Rajshahi city was found dead in his room at the dormitory last night.

The deceased -- Iqbal Sharif (25) from Murshidabad district of India's West Bengal state -- was a fifth-year student of Barind Medical College, reports our Rajshahi staff correspondent.

He was staying in the dormitory designated for the college's foreign students, said Officer-in-Charge of Chandrima Police Station Sirajum Munir.

Based on primary investigation and information given by the witnesses, police suspect that Sharif might have died by suicide. But they need to conduct more investigation to confirm how he died, police said.

Sharif went to his village home in India as the medical college was closed due to coronavirus. He returned on Tuesday.

Superintendent of the hostel Golam Maula said Sharif's friends broke open the door of his room when he wasn't responding and found his body hanging from the ceiling fan.

Sharif was taken to the hospital where he was declared dead, police said.

On March 29, 2017, Rajshahi police recovered the body of another foreign student -- Maldivian citizen Raudha Athif (21), studying at Islami Bank Medical College in Nawdapara area -- from her room at a dormitory of the medical college.
