2 Swechchhasebak League men detained in Ctg for extortion

Chittagong, Feb 25 (Just News) : Police have arrested two members of Swechchhasebak League, the ruling Awami League’s affiliate of volunteers, for allegedly shooting and injuring a Kuwait-returnee for extortion in Chittagong.

The two members of Chittagong City Swechchhasebak League are Debashish Nath Debu, 48, and Manjurul Islam Ratan, 50.

The law enforcers arrested them at Sagorika and Muradpur on Saturday after the alleged victim, Bandhan Nath, started a case against them and four others on Friday night, Panchlaish Police Station OC Mohiuddin Mahmud told bdnews24.com.

The others accused in the case are Panchlaish Awami League Organising Secretary AKM Nazmul Ahsan, and Abu Naser, Idris Mia and Md Zia, who, according to locals, are also involved with the ruling party.

Bandhan alleged in the case that he paid the accused people Tk 7 million after getting shot in the back twice and injured by Nazmul on February 9, 2016. The others accused in the case beat him up, he alleged.

He said he paid them through cheques and also had to sign on three stamped papers.

The politicians had threatened not to allow him to build a house on his land in Sholoshahar neighbourhood, Bandhan said.

After paying the money, he said in the case, he went to Kuwait again to earn money and pay the developers who were tasked with building the house.

He cancelled the deal with the developers on Jan 5 last year as they failed to start the work as per the deal, according to the case dossier.

Bandhan said he signed a new contract with other developers recently and they went to site to clean it on Feb 2, but the accused people stopped the work, demanding Tk 3 million more, pushing him to start the case.

OC Mohiuddin said the plaintiff provided the law enforcers with video footage of transaction of money with the accused people.

Ratan and Debu were produced in a court that sent them to jail on Saturday, the OC said.

We are conducting a drive to arrest the others, he added.
