Police have filed a case against those protesting the death of author Mushtaq Ahmed in jail, on as many as 10 charges including attempted murder and barring them from performing duty.
Shahbagh police station’s Sub-Inspector Mintu Miah filed the case under 10 sections of the Penal Code on Saturday early hours.
Seven of the protesters detained on Friday evening near the Shahbagh intersection were named in the case, which also has another 100-150 unidentified people accused.
Writer Mushtaq, who was detained in a case under the Digital Security Act since last year, fell sick in Kashimpur jail and later died on Thursday.
The death triggered demonstrations on Friday morning, demanding justice for him and the repeal of what many critics term a controversial law.
As the protests continued, scores of demonstrators brought out a vigil from the TSC area of Dhaka University campus around 7pm on Friday.
Soon after they reached near the National Museum, just opposite the police station, policemen started baton-charging them, leaving some 30 protesters injured.
Police, however, in the case statement claimed that 15 of their colleagues also sustained injuries in the incident.
The plaintiff told the newspaper that the bullet-proof outfit of a policeman was burnt when the agitators threw a torch on him, causing him to be hospitalized.
Many other policemen, too, were injured as brick chips were thrown at them.
Some shields and helmets were harmed, causing a damage worth of Tk Tk50,000, the SI added.
