Police directed to arrest restriction violators: DMP commissioner

Dhaka Metropolitan Police commissioner Shafiqul Islam on Wednesday warned that the police would arrest the violators of the strict restrictions imposed by the government to contain the spread of Covid-19 across Bangladesh.

Addressing a press conference at the metropolitan police’s media centre in Dhaka ahead of the weeklong strict restrictions from July 1, he said that they would take appropriate legal action against restriction violators.

He said that there might be a situation for which the police might have to arrest 5,000 people on the first day.

He said that the people would be allowed to come out of their homes only for emergency.

Only the staff of emergency services and the media houses would be allowed to move on roads for their professional activities but they would have to carry their identity cards, he said.

The government in the morning issued a circular shutting down all business activities and offices from July 1 to July 7 to contain the spread of Covid-19.

All public transports — road, river, rail and domestic flights would remain suspended during the period, the circular of the Cabinet Division said.

All shopping malls, markets and shops will remain shut, but kitchen markets and sale of essentials will be allowed in open spaces maintaining health guidelines from 9:00am to 5:00pm, it said.

None will be allowed to go out of their houses without emergency, it said and added that restaurants would be allowed to sell food online or for take away from 8:00am to 8:00pm during the restrictions.
