HC stays Sylhet-3 by-poll until Aug 5

The High Court on Monday stayed all proceedings of the by-election to Sylhet-3 constituency until the ongoing Covid strict restrictions on movements and businesses is scheduled to end on August 5.

The online bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim asked attorney general AM Amin Uddin to communicate the order to the chief election commissioner.

The bench granted the stay after hearing a public interest litigation writ petition filed by 13 people – six Supreme Court lawyers and seven other voters and residences of the constituency.

The petitioners’ lawyer Shishir Manir said that the writ petition was filed challenging the legality of the election during the strict restrictions to control death from Covid infection across the country while a total 617 people died due to Covid infection in Sylhet Division.

The petitioners sought deferral of the election until September 7.
