Flood situation worsens in Sirajganj, Kurigram; 1.50 lakh people stranded

Flood situation in Sirajganj and Kurigram has worsened as water level in the Brahmaputra, Jamuna and Dharla rivers is above the danger level.

Most of the low-lying areas in the districts have been submerged. Around one lakh people in Sirajganj and 50,000 people in Kurigram were stranded in the areas due to the flood.

In Sirajganj, water in the Jamuna river is flowing 50cm above the danger level, said Md Nasir Uddin, sub-divisional engineer of Sirajganj's Water Development Board.

The five upazilas flooded in the district are Sirajganj Sadar, Shahzadpur, Kazipur, Chowhali and Belkuchi and around one lakh people have been stranded in flood water, said Md Abdur Rahim, district relief and rehabilitation officer.

Low-lying areas and croplands were mostly affected by the flood. Over 4,500 hectares of cropland are under water, he added.

Md Bodruddoza, senior assistant engineer of Sirajganj LGED, said most of the roads, culverts of low-lying areas have been submerged.

In Kurigram, the water in the Brahmaputra river is flowing 44cm above the danger level at Chilmari point since 9:00am today while the water in the Dharla river is flowing 12cm above the danger level at Dharla bridge point in Sadar upazila, according to the Kurigram Water Development Board.

Around 50,000 people took shelter on the banks of the Brahmaputra, Dharla and Dudhkumar rivers in the district and have been suffering from food and safe drinking water crisis.

The District Relief and Rehabilitation Office has allocated 280 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 12 lakh in cash for the flood victims in nine upazilas.

In Lalmonirhat, 10 metric tonnes of rice and Tk 4.95 lakh in cash have been allocated for five upazilas. However, the government's relief has not yet reached the flood affected people, the victims said.

Ayub Ali, chairman of Jatrapur Union Parishad in Kurigram Sadar upazila, said he has received inadequate relief. The list of flood victims has been prepared. Relief will be delivered to the flood hit people today or tomorrow, he said.

The water of Brahmaputra and Dharla rivers has been flowing above the danger level for the last six days. However, the water in Teesta in Lalmonirhat is below danger level.

Haider Ali Sarkar, Kurigram District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, said that government relief for the flood victims has been sent to the areas and is being distributed.

A letter has been sent to the concerned ministry seeking more relief assistance as per the demand, he said.
